The paper describes the construction of a mechanical sling/shell recovery system and the experiences for alleviation of the standing up procedure after inhalation anaesthesia in 104 horses. The system is applied in the recovery-box and connected to 4 (5) crain chains. When sternal recumbency is achieved the horse is lifted up by individual manipulation of the cranes to standing position under fixation of the head. The procedure proved to be possible without problems in 69 (82 %) of 83 fully documented horses. Eight procedures (9,5%) were judged to be difficult and five (6%) horses did not tolerate the sling system. No correlation existed between the gender, the age, the duration of anaesthesia and the quality of the procedure.
